Our Research

Preventing alcohol harms

Our research program aims to understand sources of resiliency and vulnerability to alcohol-promoting environments, with the goal to reduce the harms of problem drinking.

Current Projects

We are looking for individuals interested in participating in research studies! Some of our projects can be completed online.

Project STATE (currently recruiting!)

Stress-related Alcohol Thoughts and Emotions

Summary: Patterns of alcohol use can emerge in response to various stressful life experiences. Yet, our current understanding of how such reasons for drinking emerge and shift in individuals’ daily lives remains limited. This study aims to understand the emotions and thoughts that influence decisions to drink as individuals go about their daily lives. This information could help improve treatments for individuals who are trying to reduce their alcohol use.

PROCESS Study

Probing Cognitions underlying Emotion Regulation, Socialization, and Substance Use

Summary: Theoretical frameworks often attribute stress-related substance use to motivations to avoid processing undesired, distressing memories and emotions. This study explores broader perceptions and experiences that also may underlie substance use patterns.

Project STRESS-X

Stress, Life Experiences, and Health among College Students

Summary: College represents a high-risk developmental time for various alcohol consequences, and college drinking often can be tied to stress and related life experiences. The purpose of this study is to better understand common life experiences and stressors among college students, as well as their relations with current health behaviors.
